Today, let’s discuss a common topic among writers: Writer’s Block. I’ve had my fair share of writing and/or drawing sessions where I just sit for hours and look at the page wondering where I should go from wherever I’m at. Something I’ve learned about myself is that writing at home is too distracting for me, I can’t get much done when I’m surrounded by all the games I need to finish and shows I need to watch and books I need to read; I do my best work when I’m out. I like to go grab lunch and spend a few hours just sitting at whatever eatery I’m at and writing away. You might think it would be more distracting, but not for me. I’ve usually got my earbuds in to drown out the conversation and sometimes, if you take a moment to watch how the people around you interact, you can glean a bit of inspiration. It helps as well if you’re drawing human characters to have real people around to check your proportions and structure against.
Another thing I like to do is write by hand. There’s just something about drawing the letters myself, compared to hitting a key on my laptop, that stimulates my creativity. I only do this when I’m trying to create new content though, editing without my computer would just create a horrible mess of scribbles and eraser shavings. I also get a lot of editing done while I’m typing out everything I’ve written. As I type I’m reading my story and making changes as needed.
The thing that helps me counter Writer’s Block the most though is to just go for it and write SOMETHING. If you just buckle down and start writing a scene, even just off the cuff, you can sometimes surprise yourself where it goes. Even if it’s not any good, you can always go back and change it later.
Well I hope sharing my techniques will help some of you other prospective writers find your way. If not, don’t worry, in the end it’s all very subjective. Who knows, you may do your best creative work in the middle of a construction site! Just keep up the hard work and God bless.
