I finally took some time to work more on the illustrations for my children’s book, “Cam and the Sleeping Island.” When I creating this character, I wanted to name her Maja, but when I was searching for the origins of that spelling, I came across the Maori spelling of Maia which translated to “courage.” Given her role in the story, and her relationship to the other characters, especially Meissa, it couldn’t have been more fitting. I set out designing her outfit based on Maori culture and gave her a fitting surname, Marama, which translates to “moon,” as a hint at her abilities.
