Dance

I stand apart,
This spot in the corner belongs to me;
I have purchased it,
Through a lifetime of seclusion.
And when the music starts to play,
It’s here I’ll remain.

But,

You take my hand and pull me in;
Hate it,
Hate it,
Hate it.
I’ll never be the same as you,
No one can debate it.

Reaching again you pull me in;
Hate it,
Hate it,
Love it.
Why do you keep reaching for me?
I’m too far beyond it.

I want to dance,
To live,
To love;
To learn of all the steps.
But I’ve been dancing all alone,
The moves are too complex.

And once more, you pull me in;
Hate it,
Love it,
Love it.
Now show me all the proper steps,
And I’ll be your puppet.

The last dance comes and I step in;
Love it,
Love it,
Love it.
There’s nowhere else I’d rather be,
Now I’m on the summit.

Teach me to dance,
To live,
To love;
I’ll copy all the steps.
I was dancing alone till now,
The moves were too complex.

One last held note,
The music ends.
Where do we go from here?
My corner calls out to me in sweet tones,
Urging me to return to the safety I know.
But now I know something different:
I know how to dance,
And that space can no longer hold me.
