Dungeon

You broke the chains. Euphoria!
Now, loosening the shackles from your wrists,
The skin beneath worn red and raw,
You traverse the stairway of the dungeon.
With each step, the air grows sweeter,
With each step, the sunlight grows stronger,
Until you arrive at the doorway.
Gripping the latch tightly,
You find you’re unable to move it.
Standing for a while in confusion,
Emotions flood over you.
Your breath comes faster,
Your eyes grow wider;
Fear had taken you,
Before you’d even noticed it.

This dungeon is all you’ve ever known;
Now faced with freedom,
You know nothing.
What lies beyond this door?
What dangers? What mysteries?
At least the dungeon never slew you;
In fact,
The chains were an embrace,
The masonry was a smile.
The shackles held your hands,
Like loving parents beside you.
Your fingers fall from the latch,
Like the tears from your face,
And you step back from the door.
Collapsing against the wall,
You fold in on yourself…
