Let me not be fooled,
For temptation comes from within me.1
When I walk with the Lord Jesus,
No enemy can approach me;
But my eyes turn away from my Saviour,
Finding pleasure in the deep black woods beyond the Way.
Distracted, I misstep and tumble from the path,
And when I have recovered, I cry,
“My Lord! Many demons came upon me,
And carried me away from You!”
But there is peace here;
The birds, undisturbed, sing their songs,
No clashing of swords, no thunder of chariots,
No footprints in the dirt but our own.
In Your grace and patience,
You allowed me this fallacy for a time,
But now, in Your great wisdom and mercy,
You’ve shown me my desperately sick heart.2
Great Physician, excise the diseased part;
These wounds I’ve carried for a lifetime,
Inhibit my ability to love, and to be loved.
With the power and care You displayed on the sixth day,3
Create in me new, healthy, living tissue.
