Gate

Boom

Invaders have come.

Boom

But the gate will hold.

Boom

The gate must hold!
I sit huddled in the corner in fear,
As the sound of the battering ram fills the air.
Please! Just leave me alone!

Boom!

It’s louder this time,
In defiant answer to my appeal.
What do you want?
I don’t understand.

Boom!!

And the gate cracks!
Light comes streaming through the gap;
It’s so bright! Too bright to stand!
I shield my eyes with an outstretched hand.
As the echo of the impact dies,
And silence fills the chamber,
My eyes adjust,
And, by the light, I can finally see,
Nothing.
This place is nothing;
No colour,
No warmth,
No softness;
An empty, soulless chamber.
A prison.
That’s when I realized,
I wasn’t being attacked,
I was being rescued.
I turn my attention toward the gate,
And throw my rage against it.
Frantically, I lay my hand to anything I can,
Striking at the gate.
My true enemy.
It’s not enough that it be opened,
It must be destroyed!
Such that it can never be closed again!
Let the lock be shattered,
And the timbers burned,
And the hinges melted down!
I can smell a sweetness in the air,
I can feel a breeze on my skin,
I can hear the voices of the joyful,
And I want to rejoice with them.
